Why Austin?

Something I’ve been asked a lot recently is, “Why did you move to Austin?”  That particular question has a particularly interesting answer.

I’ll give the lesser motivator first, because I’m sure some of you have experienced this.  No matter where I went in the United States, when I met someone from Austin, they couldn’t shut up about how awesome it was.  You never find such a unilateral outlook towards a city, so I knew something must be special about it.  But here is the main reason:

Back when I lived in Phoenix, my roommate and decided to watch the college football championship at basically the only sports bar in Tempe, which happened to be in our parking lot.  McDuffy’s.  We got seats and beers and waited for the game to start.

This was the Rose Bowl with USC against UT, and my roommate wanted USC to win.  I just basically wanted his team to lose, which gave me the ‘Horns by default.  I looked around the bar at the fans for each team, and all of the Texas fans who were women were hot, blonde, and wasted.  “Man, I bet Austin is sweet.  I should really check that place out.”  And that, in a nutshell, is how I came to Austin.  What, did you think it was for a job?  Don’t be ridiculous.

There was this one particular girl who was just smoking hot, and a slur of middle fingers and F-bombs, standing up on her chair to heckle the USC fans when Texas made big plays.  “Wow,” I thought, “That girl is definitely a Texan.”  And, she turned out to be.  She actually found this blog right before I was going to move down to Austin and didn’t even get a restraining order when I told her my reason.  I am actually typing this from her bushes.
